Beyond Sightseeing: Dublin 7 Through the Eyes of a Guide who Faced Homelessness

Overview

Looking for a different way to explore Dublin with your student group? Join this 1-hour guided walking tour through the streets of Dublin’s north side neighbourhoods and discover a side of the city that many visitors never get to see.
This unique and educational walking tour is organised by Secret Street Tours, a non-profit social enterprise, and it’s led by a guide who was once homeless himself. The tour combines local knowledge with personal stories and insights, offering a fresh perspective on local life, social issues, and the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness in Ireland.

Who is your guide?
Your North City guide is Noel, who will bring his expertise and a first-hand perspective to the streets of Dublin 7. Through his stories, students can gain a deeper understanding of homelessness and the realities of navigating city life without a secure home, while exploring Dublin's lesser-known corners.

Why Include This Tour in Your Student Group Trip?
This is not your typical sightseeing tour. Give your students a unique opportunity to explore Dublin beyond the tourist trail with this socially conscious activity. This is an excellent addition to any educational trip to Dublin for the following reasons:

  • Educational Learning Experience Beyond the Classroom – It connects classroom learning with real-life experiences and encourages students to think critically about the world around them.
  • Social Awareness and Authentic Cultural Experience – Develop a deeper understanding of homelessness, inequality, and community challenges affecting communities in Ireland. It's an engaging and enriching experience that enables students to look beyond the usual tourist attractions and connect with the people and stories that shape modern Dublin.
  • Positive Social Impact – Support a local social enterprise that creates employment for people with lived experience of homelessness, helping them share their knowledge, develop their skills, and build independence.
  • Lasting Impact – It's an authentic, educational, and memorable activity that can encourage thoughtful conversations long after the tour ends.

What’s the itinerary of this North City Tour?
You will meet your guide Noel at the Garden of Remembrance. Then you’ll walk through the Granby Centre, led by the Salvation Army, which provides support to men and women with temporary or long-term accommodation needs. Then, you will pass by St Mary's Chapel of Ease, known as "The Black Church" and the historic Mountjoy Prison. During the tour, the guide will share his personal stories and experiences with your group. The tour will end near the Blessington Street Basin, where you can walk back to the city centre or take the Luas tram or bus back.

This is not a conventional sightseeing tour. Its value lies in the conversations it creates and the opportunity to understand Dublin through the lived experiences of those who called it home.
