Discover Dublin 2 Beyond the Tourist Trail by a Former Homeless Person

Overview

Explore a different and lesser-known side of Dublin with this 1-hour guided walking tour of Dublin 2 on the South side of the city. Dublin is full of famous landmarks, historic buildings, and lively streets, but there's much more to the city than meets the eye. This tour is offered by Secret Street Tours, a non-profit organisation, and invites your student group to discover Dublin through the personal stories and experiences of someone who experienced homelessness in those streets.

Who is your guide?
Led by Kenny, the South City Tour takes your group through the streets of Dublin 2. Through personal storytelling and local, authentic insights, Kenny offers students a more human perspective on the city. His experiences help bring important social issues into focus, encouraging visitors to think about the realities faced by people experiencing homelessness. For international students, this is a chance to move beyond the usual sightseeing itinerary, gain a more authentic understanding of contemporary Irish society, and bring a different dimension to their visit.

Why Choose This Tour for Your Student Group?
Rather than simply learning about Dublin's landmarks, your students will hear directly from someone who knows the city from a very different perspective. The highlights of this meaningful walking tour are the following:

  • Learning Through Real-Life Interactions & Connecting with Local Communities – Learn beyond the classroom and explore real-world social themes through firsthand stories, discussion, and direct engagement with a local guide who has experienced homelessness. This walk is well-suited to educational travel programmes seeking to combine cultural exploration with learning about contemporary social issues.
  • Build Cultural Awareness – Help international students understand aspects of Irish society that they may not encounter through traditional tours or classroom lessons. Discover different perspectives on homelessness, inequality, and community life in Ireland, encouraging students to broaden their horizons and challenge assumptions.
  • Make a Positive Social Difference – Contribute to a non-profit enterprise that creates employment opportunities for people with lived experience of homelessness, empowering them and supporting their skills, confidence, and independence.
  • A Meaningful and Memorable Experience – This walk will broaden your students’ perspectives, and it is an enriching experience that they will remember long after the tour has ended.

What’s the itinerary of this South City Tour?
The tour will start on Palace Street, near Dublin Castle, where your guide will meet your group. From there, you’ll walk through Dublin’s narrow streets while Kenny will share his personal stories of homelessness and his exclusive point of view of the city. Your tour will end near St. Stephen’s Green, an ideal location to continue your exploration of Dublin.

Whether you're organising a school trip or a university visit, this tour can add a valuable educational and community-focused element to your itinerary.
