Visit a sheep farm in the Irish countryside and learn how sheepdogs are trained
The Wicklow Mountains are the perfect location to unwind and spend a day surrounded by nature. If your school group is looking for something unique to do in this area, we highly recommend visiting the “Irish Working Sheepdogs Farm” to enhance your trip and give you a taste of the traditional Irish lifestyle.
What is an Irish Sheepdog Demonstration?
Your group will learn about traditional and sustainable Irish farming and see border collies, the typical sheepdog breed, in action! This is a truly authentic and genuine experience, and it will be one of the highlights of your trip to Wicklow.
What can your group expect during this visit?
- Meet local shepherd and sheepdog trainer Michael for a 50-minute experience.
- He’ll tell you how he runs his farm, the challenges of today’s farming and how it has developed over time.
- He’ll explain how he trains his dogs for the job and demonstrate the types of whistles he uses to give them various commands.
- Then, it’s time to witness the sheepdogs at work! Michael will guide them through its whistles, and the dogs will direct the sheep as required.
- Questions are welcome; he will answer any curiosity you may have, so don’t hold back!
- You will watch this demonstration under a shelter, where you’ll also have the opportunity to buy some local products at the end of your visit.
Who is your guide?
Michael is what makes this experience unique! With his years of experience and deep knowledge, it’s really fascinating to hear his stories and see him and his highly trained dogs in the field. Your student group will be mesmerised!
