The James Joyce Centre in Dublin
The James Joyce Centre is dedicated to promoting and understanding of the life and works of James Joyce. The centre’s home is a restored 18th century Georgian townhouse in the north inner city of Dublin, the city of Joyce’s birth and the setting for all his works. From this central location in Joyce’s heartland the centre aims to foster an appreciation of this most remarkable and significant literary figure of the 20th century.
The current exhibition at the centre is focused on the life of James Joyce and his most famous novel, Ulysses. Learn about the author’s upbringing in Dublin, his influences and circumstances while writing it.
The centre has many ways to learn about James Joyce and his work:
- Touchscreen displays guide visitors through the structure of the novel
- 3 documentaries teach about the book and its controversies
- The film adaptation by Joseph Strick from 1967 is shown on the ground floor
- The Family Tree of Ulysses in print teaches about the different versions of the book available through the years
- “Ulysses – A Visual Schema” by James MacDonnell attempts to describe each episode down in a minimalist way
- There is also a lecture room, where lectures are held on a regular basis.
The James Joyce Centre also hosts guided walking tours, showing both places that influenced Joyce in his life, as well as settings from his novels.
This is a brilliant attraction to include in your literary tour of Dublin and we highly recommend combining it with the Dublin Writers Museum and the Hugh Lane Gallery just a short walk away.
