Cathedral With Ireland's Largest Carillon
With its magnificent view over the harbour town of Cobh, St Colman’s Cathedral boasts one of Ireland’s best views from a cathedral. St Colman was the founder of the diocese of Cloyne, to which the cathedral belongs.
When its construction started on this scenic spot in 1867, the architect Edward Welby Pugin certainly did not expect the building process to take over half a century – the cathedral was only completed in 1915. The long wait has paid off, however, as St Colman’s Cathedral is a splendid example of Neo-Gothic architecture.
Of special note is the cathedral’s carillon, which is one of Europe’s largest with 49 bells. Inside the church, you can also find delicate carvings depicting the history of Christianity in Ireland, from St Patrick’s times until today.
If your group is fond of the Neo-Gothic style, you’re in luck – St Finn Barre’s Cathedral in nearby Cork City was built with a similar aesthetic approach.
