The Road by the Sea Facing the Immensity of the Atlantic Ocean
"Bóthar na Trá" in Irish, meaning the road by the sea, is Galway's prime spot for a relaxing walk along the sea. The 2km long seaside promenade offers a fantastic view of Galway Bay and the Aran Islands, given the weather allows for it. All along the prom, as it is known to locals, lots of bars, hotels and restaurants can be found, as well as casinos and other leisure centres, such as a golf course slightly further away from the coast. Bad weather makes the promenade prone to flooding and it regularly appears in Irish news during storms, such as Ophelia in 2017.
Remember to kick the promenade wall just across from the the diving boards a good 45 minutes away from town - according to local tradition, it's bound to bring you good luck! Whether you're just in for a stroll during a late afternoon sunset or want to experience a run on the seaside, Salthill Promenade is worth a visit!
