Be prepared for St. Patrick’s Day with our top tips

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, you’ve got your group hostel in Dublin sorted but what next? There is so much happening during the festival, when you’re a newbie it’s hard to know how to plan your trip. We’ve put together some top tips on how to prepare. Read on to find out the best way to enjoy your St. Patrick’s trip…

  1. Breakfast – For the day itself, get stuck into a hearty Irish breakfast in O’Sheas on Talbot street. It will keep you on the go for hours and hours. It’s a great spot that’s just a quick stroll from our hostels in Dublin.
  2. Go Green! Dig out every last bit of green clothing you own. This is standard protocol for St. Patrick’s Day. You will see the streets lined with thousands of green hats, wigs and glasses. Local shops will have lots of novelty clothing and accessories around this time, so be sure to check them out and see what green goodies you can find.
  3. The parade – Decide your plan of action for the parade. If you would prefer to avoid the street crowds you might want to settle down in a pub to watch it on the big screen. We advise you get out there, take in the atmosphere and see it live. All our hostels in Dublin are located within easy walking distance of the parade route. Download the route here and if you have a Smartphone, there’s an app to help you along your way.
  4. After party – Decide where you’re going after the parade. We recommend booking tickets for the Guinness storehouse where you can be sure the craic will be mighty.
  5. Cash – Make sure you have a reasonable amount of cash with you as all ATM’s will have a queue a mile long during the festival and no one wants to waste half of their day waiting around.
  6. Go to a cultural event – St. Patrick’s festival is a celebration of all things Irish so embrace the culture. There will be a whole host of Irish activities to get stuck into from céilí Irish dancing to city walking tours, check out this year’s programme of events for more info.
  7. Comfortable shoes – This is the number one festival rule. You may think your pretty high heels are a good idea at the time but rest assured finding a seat in a pub (or anywhere else for that matter) will be a challenge in itself, so you need to be prepared to be on your feet all day (I.e. bring flats).
  8. The next day – If you’re planning on having a few pints of Guinness and feel there is a risk you may overdo it, stock up on headache tablets. They could be in big demand the day after. Last year, legend has it that a single box of headache tablets was sold for €100 on the streets of Dublin on the 18th March….no, really it was…
