Become a flipping pro this Pancake Day 2014

Get your frying pans at the ready; it’s that time of the year again when we are all excused from healthy eating for one day of pure indulgence. Yes you guessed it, its Pancake Day 2014! Read on to get all of our top tips on how to make the perfect, fluffy delicious dish…

The recipe…

  • 100g plain flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 300 ml milk
  • 1 tablsp. melted butter

Method

Put all of the ingredients into a blender and mix for 1 minute. Leave to stand for about 30 minutes, stir again before using. It really is as simple as that!

Next, heat a small frying until it’s very hot and then turn the heat down to medium. Add a dash of oil so the pancake won’t stick to the pan. Pour in just enough batter to create a thin coat. Cook over a moderate heat for 1-2 minutes making sure it’s not sticking. Then the flipping begins…

Flipping techniques…

Become a flipping pro with these different techniques. Be warned, this to be taken seriously, we don’t want any casualties ending up on the floor (or ceiling)!

  1. The traditional quick flip- This is the most common flip technique. Make sure the batter is cooked properly on one side and not sticking to the pan. Get a sturdy stance, aim and flip.
  2. The side slide- This is a trickier method. Leave the batter for slightly longer than usual to ensure it’s not too soft. Slide it from side to side, and then with one quick swoop flip it from the side.
  3. Spatula assistance- If you want to play it safe, get a spatula to help guide your pancake in its flip. This will help avoid any losses.
  4. The spin flip (not for the faint hearted) – This is the most challenging and should only be tried by the most experienced of flippers. Toss the pancake in the air as high as you can, do a full rotational spin, then quickly reposition your frying pan ready for the pancakes descent.

Savoury vs. sweet…

Now comes the hard decision. What to top your perfect pancake with? Do you go savoury or sweet? Well the beauty of this recipe is that you don’t have to decide. The mix makes 10, so top one with bacon and cheese for mains and sprinkle some chocolate and strawberries on another for dessert! Yummy.
Voilà you have the perfect pancakes!
